Course Description:

The basic objective of this course is to provide training which results in competence as an Occupational Hearing Conservationist (OHC). The OHC develops skills in various required elements of a hearing conservation program so that they can function successfully as a member of a hearing conservation team.


Design:

This course provides practical knowledge and actual use of modern equipment for Management, Safety Directors and Medical Personnel. Manual and microprocessor audiometers will be provided for participants use during the course practicum. A written and practicum examination are incurred. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion. The course is approved for 24 hours of Continuing Education by the California Bureau of Registered Nurses. (BRN #00049) This certification is valid for 5 years.


Course Topics:

  1. Physical acoustics and psychoacoustics for the
    industrial audiometric technician.

  2. Anatomy and physiology of the ear, visual inspection of the ear.

  3. The typical audiometer, audiometer performance check;
    methods of calibration; audiometric techniques.

  4. Supervised audiometric testing.

  5. Appropriate evaluation of the self recorder audiogram.


  1. Audiometric test room maintenance and certification.

  2. CALOSHA and FEDERAL occupational noise control legislation.

  3. Personal hearing protective devices, types; attenuation characteristics; proper fitting.

  4. Noise survey, measurement and analysis.

  5. Responsibility to employees, administrative duties.



Course Director:

Dr. Charles Fankhauser is licensed in Audiology by the Medical Board of California and certified in Audiology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. He is a CAOHC-certified course director and has been active in the field of occupational hearing conservation for 25 years as a consultant, researcher, and teacher. Registration:

Tuition must be received two weeks prior to the course date. Since expenses are fixed, refunds cannot be given unless written cancellation is received two weeks prior to the course. The fee is also transferable to a subsequent course within a six months period. The fee includes a continental breakfast both days and beverages throughout the day, but does not include hotel or transportation costs.
